How to tell genuine leather from fake: six checks you can do at home
Smell, grain, edges, water, warmth and price: six quick tests that separate full grain leather from PU and bonded leather, and what the labels in Pakistan really mean.

In Pakistan the word leather is printed on wallets that contain no leather at all, and the words "genuine leather" are used for the lowest grade of the real thing. You do not need a laboratory to sort this out. Six checks, all of which you can do holding the piece, will tell you what you are looking at. Do the first three before you pay and the rest when it arrives.
1. Smell it
Real leather smells of leather: a warm, slightly sweet, animal smell that is hard to describe and impossible to forget once you know it. PU and PVC smell of plastic or of nothing, and some have a chemical sharpness from the solvent. This test alone catches most fakes. It does not separate full grain from split leather, because both are real; for that, keep going.
2. Look at the grain
Full grain leather has an irregular surface. Pores are not evenly spaced, there are faint lines and small marks, and the pattern never repeats. Fake leather and coated split leather are embossed with a grain pattern from a roller, so the pores are perfectly even and if you look across a large enough area you will see the pattern repeat. Hold it under a lamp and tilt it; a repeating texture is a stamp.
3. Check the edges
This is the most reliable check on a wallet. Look at a cut edge, for instance the edge of a card slot. Real leather shows a fibrous, slightly fuzzy cross section, like the edge of thick felt, and a good maker will have sanded and burnished it smooth and dark. PU shows a thin plastic skin over a fabric or foam layer, and the two layers are visible as a sandwich. Bonded leather crumbles at the edge if you scratch it with a nail.
4. Press and bend it
Press a thumb into real leather and it wrinkles around the thumb like skin, then recovers. Bend it and the colour lightens slightly along the bend. PU stays smooth under the thumb and bends like a card. On crazy horse leather specifically, bending produces an obvious lighter patch that darkens again when released; that pull up effect cannot be faked by a coating, and it is explained in crazy horse leather explained.
5. The water drop
Put a single drop of water on the surface. Real leather absorbs it within a few seconds and darkens at the spot, then dries back to normal. Fake leather beads the water and it sits there until you wipe it. Heavily waxed or pigmented real leather will absorb more slowly, so give it a minute. Do this on the inside of a piece, not the face.
6. Feel the temperature
Real leather feels warm and takes the heat of your hand quickly. Plastic feels cool and stays cool. It is a subtle test but useful in a shop, where you cannot do the water test.
What the labels mean
- Full grain: the top layer of the hide with the natural grain intact. The best grade. Develops a patina, lasts decades.
- Top grain: the top layer lightly sanded to remove marks and then finished. Good, uniform, ages less visibly.
- "Genuine leather": a trade term for the split layers under the grain, coated and embossed. Real, but the lowest grade. Does not age well.
- Bonded leather: leather fibres and dust glued to a backing. Technically contains leather; behaves like cardboard.
- PU leather, vegan leather, synthetic leather: plastic. Not leather.
- "Pure leather", "original leather", "imported leather": marketing phrases with no fixed meaning in Pakistan. Ask which grade and which animal.
Why the grade matters more than the price
A full grain wallet and a "genuine leather" wallet can look the same in a photo and cost the same in a mall. In two years one has darkened and softened and the other has worn through at the corners. The grade is what you are paying for, and the six checks are how you confirm it. The price brackets are laid out in leather wallet prices in Pakistan.
