How to choose a wallet: size, fold and the pocket it lives in

A short, practical way to choose a men's leather wallet: count what you carry, pick the pocket, then pick the fold. And which Stagr wallet answers each one.

By the Stagr workshop, Gujranwala · Updated 10 October 2026

Wallet sizing is simpler than wallet marketing makes it. Three questions settle it: what do you carry, which pocket does it go in, and how do you pay most of the time. Answer those and the fold chooses itself. Here is the method we use when someone messages us on WhatsApp asking which wallet to buy.

Step one: empty your current wallet onto a table

Count the cards you have actually used in the last month. For most men in Pakistan that is a CNIC, one or two bank cards, a driving licence and maybe an office card: four to six cards. Everything else, old receipts, expired cards, a second SIM, has been riding along for free and making the wallet thick. A wallet should be bought for the cards you use, not the cards you own.

Then look at cash. If you carry a wad of notes for daily spending, you need a proper note section. If you carry a few hundred rupees for tea and transport, a folded note slot is enough.

Step two: decide the pocket

  • Front trouser pocket. Only a minimalist wallet fits comfortably. Anything folded twice will print through the fabric and sit awkwardly when you sit down.
  • Back trouser pocket. A bifold is the right thickness. A trifold works if it is not overfilled. Never sit on a full wallet for hours; it bends the cards and crushes the fold.
  • Jacket, kurta or shalwar pocket. Any shape fits, including a long wallet. Weight matters more than thickness here.
  • Bag or hand. This is where long wallets belong. They hold notes flat and have room for a phone, which is why they suit travel and weddings.

Step three: how you pay

If most of your spending is by card or phone, you need fewer slots and almost no cash space, which points to a minimalist or a slim bifold. If you run a business in cash, you want a deep note section and the extra slots of a trifold or a long wallet. Be honest about this. A beautiful minimalist wallet is useless to a man who collects cash all day.

Match the answers to a shape

  • Four to five cards, front pocket, mostly card payments: a minimalist wallet. At Stagr that is the Maverick or the Purefold.
  • Six to eight cards, back or jacket pocket, some cash: a bifold. The Kingsmann or the Regal.
  • Ten cards or more, cash business, trouser pocket: a trifold. The Majestic.
  • Notes flat, phone inside, carried in a bag or hand: a long wallet. The Rodeo or the Upbuck.

Things that matter more than size

The fold. On a good bifold or trifold the leather is skived, which means thinned with a blade, where it folds. A wallet that is the same thickness everywhere will spring open and crack along the fold within a year. Ours are skived by hand at every fold.

The stitching. Look for an even saddle stitch with a slight slant to each stitch. A straight, perfectly uniform line usually means a machine lock stitch, which unravels when one thread breaks. A saddle stitch holds because each hole carries two threads.

The lining. Card slots lined in thin leather last. Slots lined in fabric fray and slots with no lining stretch. Stagr wallets are lined in calf.

The leather itself. Full grain is the top layer of the hide with the grain intact. It is the only grade that develops a patina instead of wearing out. Ours is full grain cow leather with a crazy horse finish, which is explained in this guide.

Break in and the first month

A new full grain wallet is stiff. Fill it with your real cards and carry it; after two or three weeks the slots loosen to exactly the number of cards you keep in them, which is one reason not to overfill it at the start. The crazy horse surface will scuff lighter where it rubs and darken where your hands hold it. That is the leather settling in, not wearing out.

If the fold you chose turns out to be wrong, send it back unused within 7 days and pick another. Delivery is Rs 299 anywhere in Pakistan, cash on delivery.
